Financial Health: Check 21 Law
Financial Health is a new addition this month to our Wellness From Within e-newsletter. At first glance, it may seem out of place in a publication dedicated to improving total body wellness.

Getting Organized for the Holidays
Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way… the familiar holiday melody drifts over the radio. The song begins to echo loudly in your ears and you are starting to feel panicked, overwhelmed and stressed out - the holidays are only weeks away!

Give the Gift of Health This Holiday
It’s hard to believe the holidays are here already. To help you give gifts that are health conscious and creative, the editorial committee of the Carolina Wellness Coalition has put together a list of ideas that will long be remembered and appreciated.

Spirituality and Conscious Aging
With a couple of graduate degrees and a rather diverse work history, I thought I knew something about life. Well I did know something, but very little compared to what I began to learn when I went to work as a Hospice chaplain.

Accentuate the Positive
Body image can play a key role in how you feel about yourself. You’re more likely to feel confident if you are comfortable in your own skin and with the reflection you see in the mirror. Dressing in a way that flatters your body type is one way to do this. Oftentimes if we feel pretty on the outside it affects the way we feel on the inside.

Exercise and Injury Prevention
Whether you are a highly-skilled and highly-paid professional athlete or a three-times-a-week walker, chances are that sometime during your regular (and very necessary) exercise routine you will have to deal with an injury. Oftentimes the injury is not from an established exercise regimen, but a new or unfamiliar activity: maybe a long hike in the mountains, a 10K charity run, or learning to water ski.

Myth of Dioxins and Plastic Water Bottles
The Internet has been flooded with email warnings to avoid freezing water in plastic bottles so as not to get exposed to carcinogenic dioxins. Recently, one hoax email has been attributed to Johns Hopkins University. The Office of Communications and Public Affairs discussed the issue with Rolf Halden, PhD, PE, assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences and the Center for Water and Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Dr. Halden received his masters and doctoral degrees researching dioxin contamination in the environment. We sat down with him to set the record straight on dioxins in the food supply and the risks associated with drinking water from plastic bottles and cooking with plastics.

Orthotics: 'Til Death Do Us Part?
What is an orthotic? Orthotics are shoe inserts that are intended to correct an abnormal, or irregular, walking or running pattern. Orthotics are not truly or solely “arch supports,” although some people use those words to describe them, and they perhaps can best be understood with those words in mind. They perform functions that make standing, walking and running more comfortable and efficient by altering slightly the angles at which the foot strikes a walking or running surface.

Foundation for Wellness
I talk with people every day who want things to be “different” or “better” in their lives. This does not mean that one must be suffering in order to want life to be better. In fact, a character trait found in successful people is their constant desire for improvement and optimal performance. We can all acknowledge that we could improve some areas of our life.
