Screening for Heart Health
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), which includes heart attack and stroke, is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 800,000 people died from CVD in 2004--the most recent year statistics are available.

Advances in Breast Imaging
Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women—killing almost 40,000 in this country each year. Translated into odds, that means every American woman has a one in eight chance of developing breast cancer during her lifetime. Not a very pretty picture, is it? But consider this—more than two million breast cancer survivors are alive in the United States today, and research has proven that early detection is a key to their successful treatment and survival.

For the Health of It
Who is responsible for teaching us about health and wellness these days? Where do we learn to exercise properly and to make healthier food choices? How do we learn about the benefits of resting our bodies or the reasons we should go to the dentist twice a year?

Health is Not a Spectator Sport
Regular exercise combined with a healthy diet and adequate rest will help you ward off innumerable ills. But even the most health-conscious people get sick and need to consult a physician for advice, treatment and medication. Rather than wait for that day to come, we are offering the following suggestions as part of a comprehensive health maintenance program.

New Year's Resolutions: Before You Begin
One of the first things we associate with New Year’s is a clean slate, or starting over. We try to forget all our unsuccessful attempts at meeting the goals we set last year. This year, instead of ignoring our past failures, perhaps we could learn from them. Instead of inventing a new you, think about making small upgrades.

Rest: It's More Than Just Sleep
Why is it that we often find it difficult to get enough rest, even though it's something we know we need? It could be that the concept of rest is ambiguous and open to interpretation. While getting enough sleep is important, it’s not enough to compensate for the long hours and stresses that many of us routinely encounter at work.

WCA Joins Fight Against Colon Cancer
On February 24th, Wellness Coalition America will co-sponsor the first annual ''Unmasking Colon Cancer Masquerade Ball'' in Charleston. This is the first fundraising event in South Carolina organized to help unmask and raise awareness about colorectal cancer.

Last-minute Gifts for Health
It’s hard to believe that Christmas is just a few days away. For those of you who still have some shopping to do, the Wellness Coalition has put together a list of last-minute gift ideas that have a healthy twist. These are the types of items that will long be remembered and appreciated.

Feeding Your Defense System
I recently read an article about the effort and planning that goes into feeding a nourishing diet to our troops. It explained that, over the years, the armed forces menu has changed to keep up with our knowledge of nutrition. That menu currently includes more than 1,700 standardized recipes designed to provide tasty meals that supply adequate calories as well as meet the nutrition initiatives of the Office of the Surgeon General for lower salt, lower fat, higher complex carbohydrates and more fiber. Bottom line: if we want a powerful and successful military, we must insure that our troops are well nourished and provided with healthy food choices.
