Portion Distortion
How many times have you walked into a fast-food restaurant and been asked, “Would you like to super-size your order?”  Usually it only costs a few extra cents to get the larger portion, so what do you do?  One major consequence of super-sizing at restaurants is that many Americans are serving larger portion sizes at home too. We simply don’t know what a normal portion should look like anymore.

Here are some tips that can help you slow down, savor your food, and better control portion distortion:
  • Develop an eye for appropriate portion sizes. (For details, visit www.mypyramid.gov.)
  • Stop eating when you are satisfied—not when you “clean the plate.”
  • Just say “NO” when you are asked, “Would you like to super-size your order?”
  • Share a large cookie or muffin with a friend, or save half for another day.  You even can eat half and throw the rest away—the first few bites taste best anyway.
  • Choose the smallest size soft drink or smallest bag of chips or candy, instead of the biggie size.
  • Take a small portion of a snack food and put the container away.  Don’t sit down with the whole package.  You will end up eating too much.
  • Use smaller plates, cups, and bowls.
  • Fill your plate with salad and veggies, leaving less room for high-calorie foods.
